Drijvende kracht achter de North Side Big Band is Johan Coen. Hij leidt het orkest nagenoeg vanaf het begin. Op de jazzacademie wordt Johan sterk beïnvloed door zijn mentor Bert Joris die hem compositie, arrangementstechniek, improvisatie en bugel bijbrengt. Hij deed de nodige ervaring op bij het voormalig BRT jazzorkest en de BRT bigband van Etienne Verschueren en Freddy Sunder. Hij was 13 jaar solo trompettist bij het musicalorkest van het Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen.Hij toerde met het groot orkest van CARAVELLI door Japan in opdracht van Sony, speelde met het combo van Willy Vandewalle tijdens de zomertoer op Tenerife en was de vaste trompettist bij het BRT combo van Al Van Dam. The mainstay behind the North Side Big Band is Johan Coen. He is conducting the orchestra almost from the beginning. On the jazz academy Johan was in a strong way influenced by his mentor Bert Joris, who teached him composition, arrangement techniques, improvisation and flugelhorn. He got the necessary experience at the former BRT Jazz Orchestra and the BRT Big Band from Etienne Verschueren and Freddy Sunder. For 13 years he was solo trumpet player at the musical orchestra from the Koninklijk Ballet va Vlaanderen. He went on a trip with the big orchestra of Caravelli throug Japan by order of Sony, played with the combo from Willy Vandewalle during their summer trip on Tenerife and was the regular trumpet player at the BRT combo from Al Van Dam. He also co-operated with a lot of TV programmes, as TikTak, Stad op Stelten, Het Contract, De Smaak van de Keyser…
